Adult Literacy

In our community mission statement, we are challenged to "make God's compassionate presence known." One of the ways we strive to do this is through our Adult Literacy Program. We collaborate with Common Place, a local not-for-profit agency. The Common Place staff screens and partners adults of all ages with the sisters who volunteer to tutor. We help these adults to improve their reading and math skills and fill out forms for medical or employment purposes. Some students also study the Illinois/United States Constitution as a pre-GED requirement. We also provide GED instruction.

Since 1996, Sister Mary Luke Kapraun has been the coordinator and a full-time tutor in this program. Presently, we have seven other sisters who tutor individuals in basic skills or GED preparation.
